Job Duties:
The Dow Chemical Company has an exciting opportunity for a Product Research Engineer within the Dow Water Solutions Product R&D Group, located in Edina , Minnesota . Dow Water Solutions (DWS) is responsible for the development of FILMTEC™ reverse osmosis and nanofiltration membrane modules for the water treatment industry.

DWS provides membranes and ion exchange resins that are used for the full spectrum water treatment applications — from drinking water to process water critical to many industrial processes including the purification of foods, pharmaceuticals and other products. Dow customers are primarily original equipment manufacturers of water treatment systems, engineering companies that specialize in the design and installation of water treatment systems, water service companies that operate water treatment systems for industrial and other water end users, public and private water utilities and the military. Our customers serve a wide range of end users including power generation and semiconductor plants, chemical and process industries, municipalities, and other commercial and consumer customers. The Product Research Engineer will:

Apply fundamental engineering principles to develop products that meet or exceed the customers’ technical requirements and differentiate Dow from the competition
Support Technical Service and Development (TS&D) and manufacturing to optimize product performance
Work closely with TS&D and marketing to understand technical requirements for customers
Quickly screen technology alternatives, and choose the best cost/performance path to meet needs of our customers and differentiate Dow from competition
Assess competitive technologies and to develop QA tests
Have an in-depth understanding of the patent and trade journal literature
Work with legal department to manage secrecy agreements, ensure freedom to practice and patent new products
Use appropriate work process (i.e. six sigma, etc.) to drive product development projects
Support Process R&D and manufacturing to scale-up products, implement QA tests, and set specifications
Assist TS&D in troubleshooting product problems at customers
Assist Process R&D and manufacturing in troubleshooting product problems

Minimum Requirements include:

Bachelors, Masters, or PhD in Mechanical Engineering (BS or MS degrees must be accompanied with at least 2 years of industrial experience)
Demonstrated problem solving expertise based on the application of mechanical engineering fundamentals
Excellent communication skills, particularly in writing and presenting
The ability to take independent action to influence events
Demonstrated creativity that has led to the introduction of new or improved products or processes
Previous success in leading and participating on multi-disciplinary teams

Additional consideration will be given to candidates with:

Knowledge of or background in reverse osmosis technology
New product development experience
Experience in the development or execution of a product test program
Familiarity with the patent process
Existing patents or other technical publications that are available for review
Experience in cost/benefit analysis of design or fabrication options
Experimentation skills, such as DOE (Design of Experiments), electronic data acquisition, or hands-on laboratory experience
Expertise in computer-based engineering tools such as CAD, finite elements, CFD, or other specialized modeling packages
